Ella's Starlight Blocky Plaza: 3D WebGL Hangout & WebRTC Voice World

Author: Robert Baindourov•Published: November 4, 2026•Runtime: Node.js 26 & Linux Native

When Ella asked for a private, Roblox-inspired 3D hangout world that runs directly inside a web browser—so she and her friends could jump across obstacle courses, customize their own blocky characters, build structures together, and talk over real-time voice chat without public strangers—we built Ella's Starlight Blocky Plaza. Kids can open the direct, full-screen, zero-branding game link at https://robertscreations.com/ella-world or play inside the interactive preview below.

Why We Built a Private Browser-Based 3D Hangout for Ella and Her Friends

Commercial social gaming platforms surround young creators with public matchmaking lobbies, algorithmic upsells, and heavyweight client downloads. Ella wanted something much more personal: an instant browser link she could share with her best friends where every account is explicitly provisioned by her parents, every friend appears immediately inside a glowing starlight plaza, and voice communication feels natural and effortless.

By engineering the world around standard browser APIs—Three.js for hardware-accelerated WebGL graphics, WebRTC for encrypted peer-to-peer voice streams, and the Web Audio API for real-time speaking detection and 3D spatial panning—friends on laptops, desktops, or tablets can join within seconds using their assigned username and password.

Ella's Starlight Blocky Plaza features custom 6-part blocky avatars, a floating Sky Obby course, glowing WebRTC speaking rings, and a cooperative voxel build zone.

Real-Time WebRTC Voice Chat: Party Mode and 3D Spatial Proximity Audio

Ella made it clear from the very beginning that live voice chat was the single most important feature of her virtual world. Whether friends are racing up the floating Sky Obby platforms on opposite sides of the map or huddled around the fountain exchanging stories, they need crystal-clear audio with instant visual feedback showing who is speaking.

Peer-to-Peer WebRTC Mesh with Automatic Echo Cancellation

When a player clicks Join Voice Chat in the top HUD bar, the browser requests microphone access with hardware noise suppression, echo cancellation, and auto-gain control enabled. The client establishes an encrypted WebRTC peer connection (RTCPeerConnection) with each friend currently in the plaza.

Toggleable Party Voice vs. 3D Proximity Audio

Inside the voice toolbar, players can switch between two distinct listening modes at any time:

  • Party Voice Mode (Hear Everyone Equally): Routes each friend's incoming audio stream at full clarity regardless of where they are standing in the 3D world—ideal when one friend is high up on the Sky Obby trophy platform while another is building in the voxel sandbox below.
  • 3D Proximity Voice Mode (Spatial HRTF Audio): Routes each peer stream through a Web Audio PannerNode configured with a Head-Related Transfer Function (panningModel = 'HRTF') and inverse-distance rolloff (refDistance = 8, maxDistance = 65). As Ella walks closer to a friend or turns her camera, the friend's voice naturally pans across the stereo field and scales with distance.

Live Speaking Rings and Roster Indicators

Every local and remote audio stream is connected to an FFT AnalyserNode that samples voice energy in real time. Whenever a player speaks above the voice activation threshold, a neon emerald speaking ring pulses beneath their 3D blocky avatar's feet and their card in the Friends & Voice Roster lights up green.

Articulated 6-Part Blocky Avatars, Hats, and Dance Emotes

Each player controls a classic blocky character rig built from six articulated Three.js mesh groups: head, torso, left arm, right arm, left leg, and right leg, topped with a procedurally rendered canvas face texture with expressive eyes and a smile.

Wardrobe Studio and Accessories

Opening the Avatar & Hats dialog lets Ella and her friends customize their look on the fly with instant replication to everyone in the plaza:

  • Shirt and Pants Color Palettes: Curated color swatches ranging from starlight pink and electric cyan to royal gold and cosmic violet.
  • 3D Hat Attachments: Players can equip a Royal Golden Crown, a Starlight Wizard Hat, Neon DJ Headphones, or cute Cat Ears.
  • Expressive Emotes & Dances: Clicking Wave, Dance, Spin, or Flip (or pressing keys 1 through 4) triggers procedural keyframe limb animations.

The Floating Sky Obby Course, Jump Pads, and Co-Op Voxel Sandbox

To make the hangout plaza endlessly replayable, the 3D world is divided into four interconnected activity zones under a twinkling starfield sky:

Activity Zones and Interactive Multiplayer Mechanics

Plaza Activity Zone Interactive Mechanics & 3D Features Multiplayer Behavior
Central Starlight Fountain Glowing cyan basin and golden spire in the heart of the plaza Social gathering hub for group voice hangouts and dance parties
Floating Sky Obby Parkour Course 12 ascending neon stepping stones leading to a rotating Golden Summit Star Custom AABB platform collision and celebration announcement upon reaching the top
Neon Bounce & Jump Pads High-velocity magenta launch pads flanking the central plaza Launches avatars high into the air for aerial tricks and shortcuts
Co-Op Voxel Build Zone 6-color voxel hotbar with double-click raycast block placement on a 2-unit grid Friends can build colorful towers, arches, and forts together

Parent-Controlled Password Security and Dual Account Management

Because safety and privacy are paramount, no anonymous guest can enter Ella's Starlight Blocky Plaza. Parents can manage friend accounts in two ways:

  • In-Browser Parent Admin Panel: Clicking the Parent Admin button on the sign-in screen or top HUD and entering the parent master password (parent-starlight-2026) unlocks a live management dialog where parents can create or update a friend's username, display name, and password.
  • Server JSON Configuration File: Accounts are also persisted in clean, human-readable JSON inside data/ella_world_users.json on the server.
